What favicon size does Google Search use?

Google requests a multiple of 48px (48, 96, 144…) and displays at 16–20px. Providing 512px + 180px + 32px covers every platform.

Do I still need favicon.ico?

Modern browsers accept PNG favicons; keep an .ico at the root only for very old browsers — most sites no longer bother.
